IP Lawyer
Alexander Watts is an IP lawyer whose practice spans patent prosecution, IP and commercial disputes and strategic advisory work. With a Ph.D. in biochemistry and experience working with clients across a range of complex technologies, Alexander brings a scientific and analytical perspective to intellectual property and commercial issues. His combination of scientific training and legal experience allows Alexander to approach complex IP matters from both a technical and commercial perspective, helping clients turn innovation into strategically valuable intellectual property.
Alexander’s patent practice includes preparing and prosecuting patent applications, responding to examiner objections, conducting prior art and patent landscape analyses, and advising on patentability, freedom-to-operate and broader portfolio strategy. His experience spans the life sciences, chemistry, agriculture, energy and mechanical technologies. He works closely with inventors and technical teams to understand complex technologies and develop strategies for their protection and commercialization.
Alexander also has experience in intellectual property and commercial disputes, including pharmaceutical patent litigation, as well as trademark, copyright and contractual matters. His advisory practice focuses on helping clients understand their intellectual property position and make practical decisions about protecting, developing and commercializing business-critical technologies. This includes identifying and assessing IP assets, developing protection and commercialization strategies, conducting IP due diligence, and advising on licensing, technology agreements and IP strategy in preparation for future growth and investment.
Before joining Brion Raffoul, Alexander practised with a Bay Street IP and commercial law firm and completed his articles and summer student terms with a national IP boutique.
Alexander received his J.D. from the University of Ottawa, where he conducted research at the intersection of emerging technologies, health and intellectual property law. Before entering law, Alexander published several peer-reviewed scientific articles during his graduate research focused on the molecular adaptations of mammals to their environment.
