Liz is a patent and IP lawyer who specializes in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in high-tech and software fields. Liz has been working with applicants to protect cutting-edge AI- and machine-learning-based inventions since 2018, and is also experienced with consumer products, satellite systems, mechanical and construction tools, and energy-related inventions, among other areas. As well, Liz has worked with many patent applications for other software, SaaS, and PaaS systems, and has significant experience with both Canadian and US approaches to software and business methods subject matter. Her writing includes Patenting the AI Pipeline, which examined how to strategically prepare an AI-based patent portfolio for greater impact in view of upcoming standardization in the field.
Liz holds a JD with an Option in Law and Technology from the University of Ottawa, known for its technology law focus, where she collaborated on People as Packets in the Age of Algorithmic Mobility Shaping. She has also advised clients on grant and bid processes, copyright enforcement and infringement, IP licensing deals and settlement negotiations, and general IP strategy and contractual considerations across a range of fields. Before law school, she obtained a BSc (Honors – Astrophysics) with a minor in Computer Science and a minor-equivalent in Music from the University of Western Ontario. She also worked as a international-data analyst and back-end coder at an automotive technology company.
